The snapshot afforded by the 1787 Census (Linå, Gjern) is critical to understanding this family. Having social standing meant that they had mobility, so they weren’t necessarily tied to their home parish. Parish records from Tulstrup, where most of the children’s births are recorded, are difficult to decipher and often abbreviated.
On the 1787 Census we find Laurids Bastrup age 44 (2nd marriage) and Marie Aaboe age 36 (1st marriage). Children of the current (2nd) marriage are listed first, Andreas, Janus, Jytte, Anne Sophie, and Peder. Then comes the entry for Elisabeth age 10, child of the 1st marriage.
From the Linå parish records, we know that Laurids Bastrup married Elisabeth Schlütter in November 1772. As the census lists Elisabeth (1776) as a child of the first marriage, her older brother Mikkel (1775) is also from this marriage.
There is a death record in Tulstrup on 9 Sep 1773 for “Madame Bastrup” age 26. Her relationship to Laurs is unclear but as Elisabeth (born 1776) is listed on the 1787 Census as a surviving child, this Madame Bastrup cannot be Laurs’ first wife.
Sometime between Elisabeth (1776) and Andreas (1778), Laurs Bastrup remarried Johanne Marie Aaboe. There is no marriage record in Linå or Tulstrup. As her father was the sognepræst in neighbouring Gødvad (Viborg), it is likely they were married there. There are no marriage records from Gødvad before 1790 to be able to confirm this.
